• What is the difference between prayer and meditation?
• Another spirit once told me that it is good to have a very long prayer and meditation. After some years, this became very much a habit. Some time ago, when I asked you about it, you said that this may not be good because there is a rigidity and a habit in such prayer, and that we should try to unlearn what we did at that time. I was wondering why was it that we were told by a supposedly developed spirit to fall into this habit-pattern?
In this teaching from the Pathwork Guide, we explore the distinction between prayer and meditation, and how both support spiritual growth. Prayer is described as a first step—an intentional use of thought that helps focus the mind and cultivate constructive, unselfish awareness.
Meditation goes deeper, engaging the feelings and the soul, allowing for a more direct inner experience.
The teaching also highlights the importance of balance. Just as both thinking and feeling are essential, prayer and meditation complement one another. Over time, however, what once served as helpful discipline can become rigid routine. When practice loses vitality, it must evolve.
The deeper insight is that spiritual practice is not about repetition, but about aliveness and inner connection. As we grow, we are called to adapt—using concentration not just for structured prayer, but for self-awareness and transformation.
True meditation becomes a living process that reflects where we are and what we most need to face and understand.
